I Need Help Choosing The Right Bipod

How To Choose The Right Bipod For Your Rifle And Shooting Position

GG&G manufactures two basic bipods classified by size of mass construction; Standard Duty and Heavy Duty. Within these two different sizes we offer bipods that have different features including quick detach and thumbnut attachment methods. The difference between the Standard Duty & Heavy Duty models is that the Heavy Duty models are 30% larger in size and constructed to take the weight of a heavy weapon and hard recoiling calibers.

Below are a few points to consider that may apply to your shooting needs and mission requirements that you should consider when selecting a bipod. The Bipod Comparison Chart at the bottom of the page also provides valuable information to help with your decision.

  • The most important factors to consider when choosing a bipod is the caliber/recoil of the weapon and the weight of the weapon.

  • Remember a lightweight rifle, shooting a large caliber, will recoil more than a heavy rifle shooting a lighter recoiling caliber.

  • A general rule of thumb is that calibers smaller than, and including .308  (7.62x51mm) would best be outfitted with one of GG&G’s Standard Duty Bipods such as the GGG-1125, GGG-1407, GGG-1527 or GGG-1557. However, if you have a lightweight .308 rifle or carbine that generates heavier recoil, you would be better suited upgrading to one of our Heavy Duty XDS bipods such as the GGG-1245, GGG-1409, GGG-1721, or GGG-1745.

  • Rifle or carbines in calibers larger than .308, including 30-06, .300 Win Mag, 7mm Mag, or .338 Lapua, would best be outfitted with a Heavy Duty XDS Bipod such as the GGG-1245, GGG-1409, GGG-1721, or GGG-1745.

  • Shooters using a rifle chambered in .50 BMG, or other large calibers need the  most robust shooting platform. That being one without any panning or canting features. We recommend the GG&G LCB-3  GGG-1776  Large Caliber Bipod. However, if you would like a bipod rated for .50 with the canting feature, you can use either the GGG-1245 or GGG-1409 bipod.

  • Consider your reasoning for choosing a quick detach bipod versus a standard thumbnut version. The cost of the QD Bipods is more. Why spend the additional dollars if you do not really need a QD version. However, there are advantages. If you have several firearms that accept a bipod, a QD model allows you to quickly remove it from one and install it on another. The QD also allows you to reduce the weight of the firearm quickly if need be. If you want to shoot "off hand" versus prone or from a bench, it makes it quicker and easier to accomplish this.
  • In addition to the weight of the firearm and recoil component, your shooting position will dictate what bipod works best for you. If you shoot primarily off a bench or prone while using a firearm with a large capacity detachable box magazine, you would be best suited using a taller height bipod in order to clear the magazine. If the magazine clearance is not an issue, your body size can be a deciding factor in choosing a tall or short bipod.

  • These tips for choosing a bipod are approximate only. Each shooter and weapon are different. If you have any questions or need help choosing a bipod. Please contact one of our Product Specialist by calling 800-380-2540.
